The Leadership Office Health Check

When things slow down at the top, it is rarely a talent problem.
More often, it is an operating one.
This quick check shows where focused leadership support can unlock momentum.

How to use this tool:

Score each statement from 1 (Never true) to 5 (Always true). Total your points at the end to see where your executive operating system might need attention.

1. Decision Visibility

  • Major decisions are documented and visible to the right people.

  • Everyone knows where key decisions are made and how to find them.

If your average score is below 3: you may be operating in the dark. Start by publishing a simple decision log and reviewing it weekly.

2. Follow-Through and Accountability

  • Every major decision has a named owner, date, and expected outcome.

  • We review action items regularly until they are complete.

  • Accountability feels supportive, not punitive.

If below 3: create a visible tracker for executive actions. Make follow-through part of your weekly rhythm.

3. Tool and System Simplicity

  • The team uses a single workspace for docs, metrics, and decisions.

  • Everyone knows where to find the latest version of information.

  • Tools feel like support, not a tax on time.

If below 3: audit your stack and eliminate redundancies. Clarity starts with simplification.

4. Meeting Effectiveness

  • Each meeting has a clear purpose and owner.

  • Pre-reads and materials are sent on time.

  • Decisions and next steps are captured and shared.

If below 3: meetings may be consuming energy without producing movement. Redesign your cadence for clarity and speed.

5. Communication and Connection

  • Leadership updates are consistent and transparent.

  • Messages are honest, even when the news is hard.

  • People trust what they hear from leadership.

If below 3: communication gaps create confusion. Commit to regular updates using channels people actually read, like Slack, Teams, and authentic all-hands. The right rhythm and medium build trust faster than any newsletter.

Score your results

Add up your total (out of 75).

60–75: Your operating system is healthy. Keep fine-tuning and documenting what works.
40–59: You have friction in key areas. Address one section at a time with focus and follow-through.
Below 40: Time to reset. A fractional Chief of Staff or Executive Business Partner can help rebuild rhythm and trust quickly.
